Kaitlyn’s Story
Storyteller: Kaitlyn (she/her/hers), 22, Texas
“My favorite classes in high school were chemistry and biology. I credit that to my high school chemistry and biology teachers. They made sure to make learning fun and actually sparked my interest that later pushed me to get a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry. My AP chemistry teacher would do silly demos where he would set something on fire by mixing too things together or try and find funny ways to explain concepts to remember them better. My AP Biology teacher helped me more through support. She understood that classes could be challenging and was there every step of the way. Most of our learning was interactive where we did labs or drew maps of certain biological systems. We would have a good week of learning, then she would show us videos from the journal Nature which she thought were really cool, and they really were. Both of these STEM educators made me feel like science was something that was fascinating and that anyone could do.”
